Avon Lady

On most days, I wear no or very little make-up. I would not consider myself a cosmetic junkie, although I do indulge in girly products every now and then and am always impressed by the magic tranformation given by make-up artistry. I have a handful of high end make-up (i.e. MAC) but for the most part, I am a “buy when I run out-I think I have a coupon for that” kind of gal.

One of my Mom’s very first jobs when she arrived in the U-S of A almost forty years ago, was being an Avon Lady. I don’t think I could ever be an Avon Lady or ANY kind of salesperson…I just don’t have a knack for it. But my Mom tried it out for a bit. Since the day body odor came into my life, I have been using the same Avon deodorant and I love it. I get it through my no-longer-an-Avon Lady Mom but she places her orders through her Aunt and shares her stash with me (and yes, I’m in my thirties!).

Recently, I decided to explore their website and learn more about this veteran cosmetic company. I was stunned at all the different types of product offerings they have and how low their pricing was. I was most impressed by their empowerment of women and their still-standing slogan: The Company for Women.

I decided that instead of splurging at Sephora, I would do some early birthday shopping on avon.com. I ended up buying quite a few items that received pretty stellar reviews, crossing my fingers that I will find the products to be just as satisfying. Revert back a couple paragraphs…I AM a loyal Avon deodorant user for over twenty three years now, you know! :) Here are some of the goodies I just got along with my feedback!

Avon had a special at the time I was shopping — 3 lip glosses for $7.99 (they are regularly priced at $6.00 each). I chose the colors Cherry Liqueur, Tickled Pink and Island Glow. It was harder than I thought to choose from a picture palette versus seeing the colors in “real life”. Since giving birth to Ella, I felt like I just stopped wearing any kind of lipstick/lip color. The most I’d put on my lips would be your good ol’ standard lip balm (not even gloss). And when I WOULD attempt lipstick, it just didn’t feel or look right to me. After I read the reviews on this lip gloss, I was very curious. I have pretty full lips, and anything sticky on them, food, lip gloss or otherwise, is even more uncomfortable for me. But THIS lip gloss…wow, never used anything like this. It’s almost like there’s nothing on your lips yet they stay moisturized and colored. They apply nice and smooth, and not like a huge sticky mess of syrupy consistency. Super-light weight and TONS of colors to choose from. Today I’m wearing Cherry Liqueur — I originally picked out this color because I wanted something bright to HOPEFULLY match well with my light complexion. I also got Island Glow and Tickled Pink, which gives more of a natural look. I highly recommend this product.

SuperMagnify Mascara

So recently, I purchased a “volumizing, lash extension” mascara. I mean, really, how many mascaras promise you volume and extension? Too many. I decided to go out of my comfort zone and try “the brand” and was disappointed at how clumpy it was upon application. But practical me, I decided to use it until I found another alternative that I was willing to try and wouldn’t break the bank. I think I found it. Check out the reviews for Avon’s SuperMagnify Mascara. It was only $4.99 (about how much I paid for the the OTHER brand) but regularly priced at $9.00. Like some of the reviewers, I was kind of iffy about the mascara wand — it looked very similar to a lip gloss applicator wand, but there ARE teeny tiny bristles that are fabulous at covering every lash. No clumps, guaranteed. And like the lip gloss, it’s super-light weight.

Advance Techniques Daily Shine Dry Ends Serum

My hair, unfortunately, is rather dry. I like using serums on my hair after styling/straightening so it has that healthy shine to it. This was on sale for $4.99 (regularly $8.00) so I thought I’d give it a whirl. Like the reviews say, it does not weigh down your hair and gives it a nice, healthy shine. I love the scent too!

So far, so good, Avon! I’m extremely happy with my purchases and the savings I received on your sales. I received great products at such great prices! Yes, maybe I’d like to splurge on some fancy cosmetic product once in a blue moon, but now I know that they need to compare to the quality products I’ve seen from Avon. I’m sold!

Short Cut

Every year, right before my birthday, I go into the salon and get a fresh cut, a new color, a new look. Yesterday, I decided I was going to go shorter. I always get nervous when I’m about to do something drastic and going short definitely qualifies as “drastic” for me. I’ve gotten bangs, gotten really blonde highlights, even got red tones…this year, I wanted something that was fun but still low maintenance, and a new look. I held off on the color because I thought two drastic changes would put me over. My hair stylist is awesome! She gave me the cut I wanted and warned me (because she’s awesome) that it’s going to be much shorter than what I had currently, less layers BUT it will be easier to style. I have to say that I absolutely LOVE it.

Going Short

Ella’s 3rd Birthday: Inspiration

So the planning begins for Ella’s 3rd birthday — well, mostly brainstorming. I found some super cute and creative ideas and although some may be a little bit too ambitious for me (i.e. the Keroppi sushi rolls), these ideas serve as food for thought as I begin to put some ideas together for Miss Ella.  Since Hello Kitty is a pretty “girly” theme and Ella has a good number of boy cousins and friends, I decided to have a Hello Kitty & Keroppi party for her. I had to do a little bit of web research to confirm that our frog was in fact “male”. LOL! This year, we’re having it at our house and it will be a small(er) event than say her 1st or 2nd birthday celebrations.

Random Thoughts Thursday

  • 4pm can’t get here fast enough — DVRing the State game and I’m going to let Fresh & Easy, and the oven and microwave take care of dinner tonight! GO SDSU!
  • So excited for a mid-week date night with Hubby. Planning to check out a Hip Hop / Art event next Tuesday.
  • Spring cleaning is in progress — we participated in the community garage sale last Saturday (even though I do NOT like dealing with all the hagglers) and although we didn’t sell much, we ended up donating a lot of items. Still have a way’s to go though…
  • The boy and I have a mini dance routine we made up during the garage sale — this is what happens when you wake up at 6am on a Saturday, are tired and delirious. Haha.
  • My friends are the BEST — they are planning a Girls’ Night Out for my birthday. :)
  • Planning for Vegas — just a couple of weeks away!
  • I finally digitized and housed all of our family newsletters on issuu.com AND I’m almost done with our Spring issue!

Making Progress :)

So, a week and a half ago I decided it was time to “get serious” about Ella’s potty training. My original goal was to begin the start of the year, but due to the unexpected events, Ella’s schedule became a little bit impromptu and it was hard to focus on keeping her focused on the goal. Honestly, I had a lack of committment primarily due to being overly consumed with everything else going on. But, I decided that it was time and I’m happy to report that she has been doing an excellent job. There were  a few “accidents” that had happened throughout last week, but I can honestly count them on one hand. She has gotten to the point where she tells us she has to go Number 1 or Number 2. I am one proud momma! As an incentive (and to hopefully teach her responsibility), I introduced a “report card” to her which has symbols that stand for:

-Taking a Bath
-Brushing Your Teeth
-Putting Away Your Toys
-Using the Potty

Every time she completes these responsibilities, I place a sticker or stamp in the box. At the end of the week, she knows she’ll get a surprise from us. So far, it’s working.

I am in the midst of planning her 3rd birthday – I can’t believe how fast my little girl is growing up.

Tomato Soup: From Ordinary to Extraordinary

The STAR Ingredient

A couple of nights ago, we decided to pick up a few Vietnamese sandwiches from our local Asian Market around the way. Hubby thought the gloomy, raining weather deserved a nice bowl of soup to accompany the sammies. After poking around in the pantry, he pulled out a family size can of tomato soup. Little did I know he was going to turn this average, almost Spaghetti-O flavored soup into a gourmet concoction using simple ingredients we had on hand. The end result looked something like this…

I just grabbed the closest photo that resembled what we indulged in the other night off of Google images. Seriously, if this soup didn’t make an impression on me, I wouldn’ t give it real estate on my blog. But I decided to share since it was so easy, comforting and delicious. I had the leftover soup for lunch yesterday and it was SO good. You bet I’ll be stocking up on these cans of soup! Nice work, honey!

Start with a can of tomato soup in a sauce pan on medium heat – any brand of soup will do, but we used Campbell’s. Add a can of water, as the directions ask you to do. Add in your choice of Italian herbs. Add 2-3 tablespoons of heavy cream. When serving, top the soup with croutons and add shredded parmesan cheese. Enjoy!

All Over The Hangover

Recently, the Hubby and I watched the movie The Hangover. In fact, let me say that I was trying to take an afternoon nap and was awaken by the hilarious dialogue of The Hangover and had to wake up to see what it was that I was listening too. Since then, we have been obsessed with the ridiculous characters and have been emailing each other random quotes from the movie. Apparently, I’m Stu and the Hubby is Alan. LOL. Or vice versa…whatever. :)

So with my newfound love for this movie, along with my love for creative “stuff”, can you imagine how much I got a kick out of this Hangover-themed 10 year anniversary party??? Oh YES! I recommend that you see the movie before clicking on the link so you can “get” and appreciate ALL of the details. Jennifer Sbranti, founder of Hostess With The Mostess, is my idol! :) Click here.

My heart aches for the people of Japan. It makes me so sad to think about all of the lives lost and the aftermath of yet another world tragedy. Just another reminder to not take life and your loved ones for granted. Counting my blessings…

Date with Mommy #3

Ella and I had a fabulous day together. She is a huge Justin Bieber fan, so I thought taking her to the movie would be the next best thing to taking her to an actual JB concert…plus she’s only 2 and a half, so it’s easier to manage a little one in a movie theater. The day was all hers! I was excited for her and nervous at the same time since this would be Ella’s very first movie experience. The movie held her attention, and can I just say that I have this newfound respect and love for Justin Bieber? He is so talented and entertaining, and I’m so glad that I was able to watch it with the biggest JB fan in our family!

Ella & Mommy

Ready for some JB!

3D glasses and popcorn - check!

After the movie, we walked over to the bookstore to pick up a Justin Bieber magazine, as promised. Ella loved the green chairs in the children’s reading area so much that she made herself comfortable as she flipped through her new magazine! I love bookstores so it was nice to see Ella enjoy it as much as me. :)

All smiles after the movie!

And in true Mommy & Me Date fashion, I let her choose what we would eat for lunch. At first I thought she said “Cotton Candy” but she corrected me and said “No Mommy, not cotton candy. I said kare-kare.” LOL. I was pleasantly surprised that my kid asked for a Filipino dish which just happens to be one of my favorites. Kare-kare it is then. :)

“Ella, I love you very much and I cannot wait to experience many more special moments with you!”
